In the Service of Mankind

Dr. Kumar Kanti DasBetter known as Lakhan Das, Dr. Kumar Kanti Das is a renowned personality in the field of surgery. Even though he has contributed immensely to this field, he remains humble and that in itself is an indication of his great personality. Since 1992, till date, he has been rendering his services in Sundari Mohan Seva Bhawan (Kalayani Hospital) in Srikona.

He completed his matriculation in 1958 from Imphal and his ISC from St. Edmund’s College in Shillong. He then went to Calcutta to complete his MBBS from Calcutta National Medical College in 1968. After this, he went to Safdar Jung Hospital, New Delhi and stayed there from 1965 to 1967. Then from 1967 to 1985 he underwent training in Binghamton, New York. This training period lasted from 1967 to 1972 and he practiced there from 1973 to 1985. After his return to India, he joined the Red Cross Hospital in Silchar where he served from 1987 to 2004. He is also associated with the Cancer Hospital and has worked in many places like Karimganj, Hailakandi and many other places in the Cachar District of Assam which is one of the most Cancer prone areas in the country.

Dr. Das has also discussed about and expressed his concern about the diseases which are quite common in the Barak valley like gal bladder, ulcer, cancer, throat cancer, etc. He says that all these diseases occur due to the consumption of ‘tobacco’. There are other such diseases like typhoid, cholera, dysentery, which are caused by contaminated water. He further adds that these diseases occur due to the ignorance of the local people. He also focuses in on well established food fads such as eating fish, meat or eggs leading to good health and says that these are wrong notions and in his opinion, a vegetarian diet is the best way towards a long, healthy life.

Dr. Das says that he will keep working as long as he can and will always try to perform at his best in the hospital. He regards this present period as the best part of his medical career and hopes that the lack of basic amenities that is a major problem in today’s medical system will be addressed and rectified soon.
