Draft Population Policy in Assam

By Dwaipayan Dasgupta

Of late, the government of Assam has announced its draft population control policy. Unique in its objectives, it has undoubtedly been a much-needed and wellconsidered exercise in the backdrop of the State’s everincreasing population.

The information in this regard was, however, divulged by the State Health and Family Welfare Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma while talking to media persons that in Assam, in the recent past, population has increased abnormally. This phenomenon has had its heavy toll over the years not just on education and health but also on the socioeconomic developmental front of the State. What figures did the Minister disclose about the population growth, is something far from amusing. He said the State’s population rose by 46 lakh from 2.66 crore in 2001 to 3.12 crore in 2011. He also viewed that preliminary analysis has revealed an increase by one crore in 16 years between 2001 and 2017. This increase is unacceptable, he said. So, this growth is indeed much too high, if viewed against the fast-shrinking dwelling place in Assam.
