Shillong’s Space Phone

 S. Raghunath

The giant American t e l e communi c a t ions company AT&T has just unveiled what it calls a “space phone” in the atrium of its New York headquarters. This is a path-breaking concept in longrange communications and visitors will be encouraged ttry it and establish contact with extraterrestrial beings. It will also give people a rare chance to hear their own voices long after they are dead.

I have been talking to a senio official of Shillong Telephones (ST) and I casually told him about the space phone “Oh stuff and nonsense,” he snored disdainfully, “what’s the big deal about it? We in Shillong, Telephones have been operating space phones for so many years now that it’s all old hat to us. Sorry, but I’m not impressed.” “You mean there are space phones in Shillong?” I asked incredulously. “Look, dummy,” snapped the ST official irritably, “What do you think I’ve been trying to tell you and your’re welcome to try out our space phones straight away, It’s on my desk right in front of you.  Just try calling pir “Directory Enquiry” or “Fault Control” or “Time” service and our operator won’t lift the receiver and attend to your call until the telephone has rung a minimum of 13,167 times and that too after consecutive attempts during non peak hours. Isn”t this as good as establishing contact with extraterrestrial being a billion light years away?”
