Drugs menace

in Dibru garh: Is permanent solution possible?

Ripunjoy Das

The trade of illegal drugs and the upper Assam city of Dibrugarh has a old relation. It was in the early 70s when the infamous druglord Badshah Khan sowed the seeds of drugs in Dibrugarh with the introduction of opium among the people here which he had brought from neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh.

Khan was already an established ‘timber mafia’ of the region and his calculated risk of carrying out the business of opium along with illegal timber smuggling, paid dividends almost immediately. Khan not only created a sprawling opium market in Dibrugarh but also gave birth to a number of small time drug lords who gradually graduated to various levels as their business grew rapidly.
