In describing and confronting what the British did to us, are we refusing to admit our own responsibility for our situation today? Are we implying that British alone are responsible for everything that is wrong with us? Of course not,” – writes Shashi Tharoor, Congress MP and a prominent writer in his now best seller book, ‘An Era of Darkness: The British Empire in India’.
But the best seller book from a former career diplomat in the United Nations hardly talks about ‘soul searching’ for the Indians on how they too are responsible for the ill-treatment, misgovernance and torture meted to them during the colonial rule. On the contrary, the book opens up a much sharper debate. It blasts the British rulers – like never before in the history – and tries to underline more than once that today’s modern Britain, also much weaker than its glorious past, owes an “apology” to India
