KHADC to push for ‘United’ Council

The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has decided to table a resolution seeking to include the word ‘United’ to its name during the upcoming winter session to be held from November 20 to 22. KHADC Chief H.S Shylla said that the Council have decided to bring a resolution for renaming the District Councilo to ‘United Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council’ (UKHADC) in the upcoming session of Council,”

H.S Shylla said that after India got its independence, the United Khasi Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council was constituted by including the Khasi Jaintia District, which were under the British areas “However when Jaiñtia Hills was later bifurcated (Khasi Jaintia District), they were given Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District (JHADC) but there was slight mistake while giving us the KHADC because it also includes the 25 Khasi states whose possession was very unique,” he said. Shylla said the Khasi states are independent as they are part of India through the signing of the Instrument of Accession (IOA). “Since there was no instrument of merger (being signed), the possession of Khasi states is very strong,” he added. The KHADC chief also said that there is nothing wrong in the present names of the JHADC and GHADC because they fall under the British areas.
