The University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) is the first State Private University dedicated to foster Science and Technology in all the modern dimensions. Established under the provisionsof the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya Act (No.6 of 2008) enacted by the Legislative Assembly of Meghalaya State (Notification No LL(B)87/2008/21, dt. 02.12.2008). The University is empowered by the University Grants Commission (UGC), to award degrees under section 22 of the UGC Act, 1956.

USTM is sponsored by Education Research and Development Foundation (ERDF), a registered philanthropic trust working in the field of education since 2005. Over the years it has become a leading player in north eastern India with over 5000 students pursuing education from nursery to PG. It is determined to create a healthy eco-system of education in the region and provide necessary impetus to the overall socio-economic development through strong vision and focus on Education, Research and Development.

The USTM is established in over 400 acres of picturesque landscape surrounded by mesmerizing greenery at Kiling Road of 9th Mile in Ri-Bhoi District of Meghalaya. The campus is about 85 km from Shillong and about 11 km from the capital of Assam, Dispur.

The true motive of USTM can be well summed up in the words of Mr. Mahabubul Hoque, the Chancellor of the University and Chairman of ERDF: “We are committed to materialize our vision to become one of the leading Universities of the country by  exploring opportunities and talents of the North East region, bringing together leading academics, researchers, entrepreneurs, thinkers and other stakeholders in an endeavour to synergize their expertise with a view to impart world class education thereby creating a centre of cutting edge research and societal development in order to play a significant part of the process towards achieving vision 2020.”

The University, through its 7 Schools - School of Biological Sciences, School of Applied Sciences, School of Business Sciences, School of Social Sciences  and  Humanities, School of Education, School of  Media Sciences and Cultural Studies, School of Engineering and Technology provides a host of Under Graduate and Post Graduate courses as well as PhD programmes.

USTM takes special care and extends support and provides free education to exceptionally meritorious students from families belonging to Below Poverty Line (BPL).  It also gives special relaxation to the meritorious students belonging to various backward, tribal and minority communities of the North East region. ERD Foundation sponsors free admission to the toppers from different universities in the North East to get admitted in USTM.

33% of the seats in various courses are reserved for girl students with special preference to children from the backward and underprivileged sections of the society. 12 students from the BTAD violence affected area are studying in the University with full fee waiver.
