The pandemic has left a colossal impact on the country’s economy including political and social. Psychologically, it has taken a toll on everyone in many untold ways and is still continuing. The economic impact has led to unemployment, recession, financial uncertainty, the collapse of industries and essential services disruption to name a few. Political impact has led to increased restrictions in travelling, change in national and foreign policies, international and national tensions and of course political blame game to show that one is not doing enough to manage the country during such a crisis.

Tokyo Olympics turned out to be the best ever outing for India in the history of the greatsporting extravaganza of the world. With one Gold, two silver and four bronze, the seven medal haul is the greatest ever podium finish for India till date. The icing is Neeraj Chopra’s gold, the first ever athletic medal for India since 1900.

Before the Tokyo games, the London Olympics 2012 was tagged the best performance for India with six medals – two silver and four bronze. In the Beijing Olympics 2008, although Abhinav Bindra won India’s first individual Olympic Gold medal in the Men’s 10m Air Rifle Shooting, India could win only three medals including two bronze.

I was keen to see the Royal Palace of Manipur for many reasons. It was the place where the king was converted to Vaishnavism. It was the place from where Rash Lila and other Radha -Krishna love story related dance and musical forms emerged in the distant Northeast. The Manipuri kings possibly came from Tibet via Thailand and Burma about six hundred years back .The ethnic population had their own religion.

Ever since the arrest of the Manipur activists Erendro Leichombam, there had been a debate revolving around the law on the basis of which he was arrested. Leichombam (40), along with journalist Kishorchandra Wangkhem 41, were charged under the stringent Act in May 2021, for Facebook posts they put up after the death of Manipur Bharatiya Janata Party Chief Saikhom Tikendra Singh due to Covid-related complications. They had criticised the saffron party for purportedly promoting cow urine as a cure for the infection.

The activist had written in his post that cow dung and urine were not a cure for the coronavirus and expressed condolences at the death of the BJP leader. “The cure is science and common sense,” the post added.

Covid-19 cases continued to surge in Meghalaya as 9 more people succumbed to the virus as on 3August, increasing the fatality figure to 1118. It is unfortunate as Shillong being a tiny state with a population of around 32 lakhs still lags behind, acting tardy in vaccinating to at least half of it. Whereas the capital of India, Delhi having a population of  around 3 crore has successfully been able to vaccinate 90% of its population surging to a mere number of not more than 200 cases daily. The reasons are ascertained to be numerous out of which hesitancy and myth regarding the vaccination is seen to be prominent.

Vaccine Hesitancy – loosely defined as the phenomenon of people refusing to get inoculated despite the presence of a safe and effective vaccine – is complex and driven by several factors. The extraordinary circumstances and the crunched timelines under which the Covid-19 vaccines were developed makes it even more complicated. Thus, experts believe it is only natural for people to be apprehensive.

Perhaps the birth of no nation freed after remaining shackled for 200 years since the East India Company grabbed the land after defeating the last Nawab of Bengal Shiraj-ud-Doulla was so aptly described than in the case of India by its first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.   

No doubt such a newly freed nation made a Tryst with Destiny 74 years ago at the midnight on August 15, 1947. This was the land that came under the British Crown from the hands of East India Company in 1859 under the Queen’s Proclamation.

Most justifiably, Pundit Nehru said "At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance...”

The History marking the Independence Day

It is pertinent to recall that at the 1929 Lahore session of the Indian National Congress, the ‘Purna Swaraj’ declaration, or "Declaration of the Independence of India" was promulgated and January 26, 1930 was declared as Independence Day. The Congress called on the people to pledge for ’civil disobedience’ and to carry out the party’s instructions issued from time to time until India attained complete Independence on August 15,1947. Celebration of such an Independence Day was envisioned to stoke nationalistic fervour among Indian citizens, and to force the British Government to consider granting independence. The Congress observed 26 January as the Independence Day between 1930 and 1946 and later it was rechristened as ‘Republic Day’. The celebration was marked by meetings where the attendants took the pledge of Independence.
