Shad Lukhmi Festival of Marngar
Lukhmi is the deity believed to be the goddess of wealth and prosperity in which the Creator had showered blessings, bestowing His bounty
Raij Marngar, is one of the administrative unit of the state of Hima Mylliem, adjacent to Raij Nongpoh in Ri Bhoi, Meghalaya. It is here that the Marngar community had settled right from the undivided Hima Shillong. The monoliths scattered in the lush landscape of green vegetation testify to the settlement of the Marngar community, about a century ago.
Like other parts of the Ri Khasi, Ri Pnar or Jaintia, Ri War and Ri Lyngngam of the Hynniewtrep people, the Raij Marngar, also share its unique history, social system, religious practices and culture, presenting a colourful mosaic, that have stood the test of time, in this eastern part of the state of Meghalaya.
It is during the autumn season, when the paddy crop has ripened, in the vast stretch of fields like a golden carpet, that the Shad Lukhmi festivity is held, before harvesting, as people of Marngar are essentially an agrarian community.
