DEMOCRATIC   ROOTS

In  Meghalaya  there are two  lakh  eligible  voters,  who  are  yet  to  be  enrolled.  An  awareness  is  therefore  being  created  for  voters  to  come  out  and   exercise  their  rights  in  a country  having  democratic roots, especially  in  the  foundation of the traditional democratic institutions. There was therefore this launching of the Electoral Literacy Club. These are  intended  for  promoting  electoral  literacy  among  the  citizens  through  these  clubs  countrywide,  specially  for  making  future voters  of  how,  when ,  where, what  and  why  they  should  take  part  in  electing  their  representatives  at  all  levels,  whether  it  is  to  the  state  assembly,  Lok  Sabha and  other  levels.  The  target  of  imparting  this  knowledge  is  targeted  to  youngsters  between 14  to  17  years  of  age  to  enable  to  prepare  themselves  for  their  rights  to  vote  also  of  the  new  voters  in  the  age  group  of  18  to  21  years. Their  votes  very  much  matter  in  having  their  faith  in  the  ballot.  Along  all of  these  past  years, voting  pattern  has  been  blind,  where  voters  back  up  different  parties  and  individuals  like  a  flock  of  sheep  without  fully  understanding  the  impact  of  the  consequences.

AVENUES IN JAPAN 

Students  in  the  state  have  been  encouraged  to  learn  Japanese   language,  as  job  avenues  would   be  open  for  youths.  The  State  Government  had  in  this  connection come  to  a  conclusion  with  the  Asian  Development  Bank  in  encouraging  the  youths  and  students  in    various  institutions for the introduction of “Language Course  and  Skill  Oriented  Training”.  This would  open  up  the  scope for  a  wider  range  of  education  and  also  at  the  same  time  provide  gainful   job  opportunities  in  the  different  industrial  units  existing   in  Japan.   Educational  institutions  in  the  state  have  therefore  been  asked  to  take  interest  in  the  Japanese  language  course   for  inclusion  in  the  curriculum  of  the   institutions.  The  youths  already  have   talents,  which  can  be  further  sharpen and  shaped  according  to  the  needs  and  requirements. The Asian Development Bank, besides  would  explore  other  avenues  of development in the state including agriculture, road construction horticulture, food  production,  health,  general  education  and  sports.

EVILS OF SOCIAL MEDIA 

Though  social  media  is  serving  the  interests  for  spreading  faster  information,   yet  there  is  at  the  same  time  the  dark  side  of  misusing  which  include  cyber  crimes. The Martin Luther Christian University in Shillong has created awareness. That in  Shillong  itself  there  are  as  many  as  300  social  websites,   which  are  used  by  specially  the  youths  and  students  in  their  day  to  day  contact,  even  with  friends  and  acquaintances  within  and  outside  the  country.  Social  media  including  internet  have  however  both  positive  and  negative  aspects.  There  is  therefore  a need  today  for  imparting  proper knowledge  and  know  how  among  the  youths  on  the  merits  and  demerits  of  the  social  media.  Besides, there  is  the  Facebook  and  Instagram  facilities  that  have  come  about  but  the  main  concern  is  that  the  youths  should  not  be  misled  in  using  these  media  for criminal  and  other   anti-social  purposes.  In  anything  there  is  always  two  sides  of  the  coin.

RAINFALL RECORD

The south-west monsoon has arrived. The  rainiest  spot  in  the  world  Sohra,  received   281.7   millimeter  on  June  13,  accompanied  by  lightning  and  thunder covering  the  rain belt  valley  from  Sohra  to  Pynursla,  trapping  the  monsoon  clouds. State capital Shillong recorded 173 mm of rainfall. Rivers  and  streams  have  been  flooded,  the  beauty  lies  in  the  cascading  of  waterfalls specially  in  Sohra,  thundering  to  the  deep  and  green  valleys.  However,  damage  was  caused  in  residential  areas  of   Nongstoiñ  West  Khasi  Hills.  The  Speaker  of  the  State  Legislative  Assembly,  Donkupar  Roy  along  with  the  Education  Minister Lakmen  Rymbui  and  District  Council  Member  Grace  Mary  Kharpuri  were  caught  in  a  road  block  at  Mawkyrnot  near  Pynursla,  while  on  their  way  to  Umñiuhtmar. The  Speaker   had  to  return  back  to  Shillong  by  hiring  a  local  taxi.
