SMART SHILLONG

Shillong  was  but  a  small  town,  about  a  hundred  fifty  years  ago,  when  the  capital  of  the  Assam  province  was  shifted  from  Nongsawlia  in  Sohra,  the  rainiest  spot  on  earth.  The  town  was  then  known  as  Laban  which  spread  gradually  in  an  unplanned  and  haphazard  manner.  With  the  growth  of  the  population  it  gained  the  status  of  a  city.  However  it  earned  the  name  as  the  “Queen  of  Hill  stations and  also as  the “ Scotland  of  the  East”.  After  a  long  wait  Shillong,  the  city  named  after  the  deity  “U Blei  Shyllong”  entered  the  prestigious  list  of  being  one  of  the  smart   city  of  the  country.   Rupees   500  crore   would  be  received  as  grant  and  another  matching  amount  would  be  needed  from  the  state’s  coffer  to  meet  expenses  in  improving  the  sewage  system,  drainage  and  waste  management  to  remove  traffic  congestion  and  planned  expansion  of  this  city  into  a  clean,  tidy  and  upmarket  standard. It  would  certainly  be  an  uphill  task  for  the   state  government  to  meet  the  expense.

THE FISHY FISH PONDS

Something  is  fishy  of  fish  ponds,  numbering  about  twenty  thousand  costing  about  400  crore  rupees,  under  the  Aquaculture  Mission,  launched  last  year. The Meghalaya  State  Planning  Board has  decided  to  conduct  an  inspection,  whether  such  ponds  have  been  actually  constructed  in  the  state.  This  should  cut  down  the  import  of  fish  from  outside  the  state.  The  present  demand  is about  thirty one  metric  tonnes  per  year,  while  production  within the  state  is  about  six  thousand  tonnes.  A  report  on  the  fishy  fish  ponds  is  also  awaiting  from  different  departments on the implementation of the integrated  Basic  Development  Livelihood  Programme. Following  which  a  white  paper  would  be  submitted  to  the  government of  the  actual  status  of    the  fishy  fish  ponds.

SUB DIVISION   DEMANDS   MULTIPLY

The demands for more civil sub divisions in the state multiply. Whether government would    concede to these  demands  after  Martin  M. Danggo  had  resigned  from  the  Congress  and  on  his   way  to  join  the  National People’s  Party (NPP)  on the  inauguration  of  the  new  Ranikor  civil  sub- division.  The Mawlai constituency Legislator, Process T.  Sawkmie  had  made  it  a  point  in   meeting   the  Chief  Minister  Conrad  K.  Sangma   staking  claim  to  upgrade  Mawlai  a  suburb  of  Shillong   into  a  civil  sub  division  having  a  population  of 80,000.
