There is no gainsaying that one of the most intractable problems having a longterm negative impact on the life of the people of Assam is the suspected foreigners from Bangladesh illegally living in the land-deficient State. Quite naturally, the local people were very much concerned over the large presence of illegal immigrants. After all, should the influx from across the border continues, it will not only turn the Assamese people into a minority in their own land but also pose a serious threat to their sociocultural life.

THE HAJONG PLUNGE

Ampati  awaits  the  crucial  and  prestigious  final  contest   to  the  sixty  member  Legislative  Assembly  of    Meghalaya.   The  stronghold  of  the  Congress  and  former  Chief  Minister  Mukul  Sangma,  who  had    now  chosen  his  27  year  old  daughter  Miani D. Shira to hold the fort.  Though  her  father  and    mother  Dikancchi  Shira  are  seasoned  politicians,   Miani  is  coming  out  in  the  field  for  the  first  time.  She  is  pitched  against  Clement  Momin  of  the  National  People’s  Party  (NPP),  who  obviously    has  the  advantage  of  the  ruling   Meghalaya  Democratic  Alliance.  However,  in   between  comes  in  Subankar  Koch,  who  was  denied  a  BJP  ticket,   yet  determined  to  go  ahead  as  an  Independent.  Therefore,  the  Koch  factor  could  upset  either  side  in  the  matter  of  the  voting  pattern,   although  the  BJP  is  coming  all  out  right  from  the  national  and  state  leaders,  who  are  thick  in  the  campaign. The total voting strength of Ampati is thirty thousand. Subankar  Koch  has  a  slice  of  ten  thousand  votes,  specially  from  the  Hajong  and  Koch  and  also  Garo  and  Muslim communities,  which  can  tip  the  scales  in  favour  of  Clement  or  Miani.

There is a common headline that The Onion (premier satirical news outlet) uses whenever there is a mass shooting in the USA. It is very unfortunate that that we get to read this headline frequently. Most of the article is also redundant where only the place and dates are changed. This is not trivializing the grave occurrence that it is talking about but on the contrary, it is working on the principle of castigat ridendo mores which means ‘laughing corrects morals’. Simply put, satire does cause social change.

Primary education is base of personal-social and cultural ethos along with economic booms. Who can deny this fact? Even though the emerging scenario of P-Education is not inspiring. Cocking a snook at the tall claims of the Centre and UP Government regarding promotion of education, the ramshackle condition of building of Basic Shiksha Parishad schools which sans the basic facilities speak volumes for the double standard residing in power.
