The agitation has completely crippled the higher education sector in Manipur with all of the 86 undergraduate colleges, affiliated to the university affected by the shutdown. Endorsing the demand of the students, 29 of the 31 Heads of Departments of the university have quit their posts and six deans of the university have tendered their resignation, jeopardizing the academic careers of over a lakh of students, pursuing higher studies in Manipur.

The struggle for India’s Independence began in 1857 with the Sepoy Mutiny in Meerut. Later, in the 20th century, the Indian National Congress and other political organizations, under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, launched a countrywide independence movement. Colonial powers were transferred to India on August 15, 1947. The Constituent Assembly to who power was to be transferred, met to celebrate India’s independence at 11 pm on August 14, 1947. India gained its liberty and became a free country at midnight between August 14 and August 15, 1947. It was then that free India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru gave his famous “Tryst with Destiny” speech. People across India are reminded of the meaning of this event - that it marked the start of a new era of deliverance from the British colonialism that took place in India for more than 200 years.

For years, the massive influx of illegal immigrants in Assam has been viewed as a regional problem. The unrelenting flow of these foreigners from Bangladesh began during the British rule and continues still today through the 262km border that Assam shares with Bangladesh, which is still not completely sealed. The lack of strong laws and political audacity by the previous governments demonstrate their inability or unwillingness to perceive the immigration issue in Assam as a national threat.

A MEDICINAL EXCHANGE 

Traditional medicine is  back,  with  lack  of  facilities  of  modern  cure  of  the  various  diseases  that  afflict  the  people.  In  fact  traditional  medicine  is  now  being  supported  and  encouraged,  which  is  commonly  known  as  folk  medicine.   In  Shillong  the  Union  Minister  of  State  for  Health Shripad  Yesso Naike,  has  affirmed  that  the  Centre,  would  promote  traditional  healing  methods  including  AYUSH. The  Minister  stated  that  there  is  need  for  a medicinal exchange for taking the traditional formula from the ancient healers and  subsequent  cures,  would  be  taken  up  by  the  Central  Council  for  Research  in  Ayurvedic  Sciences  Research. However,  at  the  same  time  there  is  an  urgent  need  for  preservation  of  medicinal plants. It  is  therefore  needed that  the  state  government  to  be  equally  responsible  for  the  exchange  of  medicinal  knowledge  between  traditional  and  modern.

OFF LIMITS IN URANIUM ZONE

The  Regional  Director of  the  Atomic  Minerals  Division has  said  that    personnel  of  the  Division were  engaged  in  only collecting  uranium  samples  in  the  Wahkaji  and  Mawthabah  areas  of  Khasi Hills, The  Division  had  also  stated  that  it  had  got  clearance  from  the  Rangbah  Shnong,  the  headman  of  the   villages  in  the  area.  The  Deputy  Chief  minister  of  Meghalaya,  Prestone  Tynsong  on  the  other  hand,  has  said,  the  government  had  taken  a  decision  to  stop  all  activities  relating  to  the  exploration  of  uranium  deposits  in  the  area.  Meanwhile  a  team  of  the  Khasi  Hills  District  Council  visited  the  area,  to  verify  whether activities  of  exploration  of Uranium is being  carrying on,  which  is  considered  to  be  illegal without  the  approval  of  the  District  Council

WOMAN CAN BE STRIPPED OF HER ST STATUS

The  Khasi  Hills District  Council,  under  the  leadership  of  the  Chief  Executive  Member,  Hispreaching  Son  Shylla has  brought  a  bill,  to  deny  any  indigenous  woman  marrying a non-indigenous  person, benefits  of  Schedule  tribes,  which  had  brought  a  mixed  reaction,  from  the  political,  social and  other  level  of  society, The  Bill  states  any  woman  defying  the  principle of the bill,  Will be  stripped  off her  scheduled  tribe  status  and  other  privileges.   Mix marriage  has  been  and  is  a  practice  that  has  been  going   on,  not  only  in  the  Khasi  society,  but  also  other communities,  as  it  is  regarded  of  being  a  private  affair   of  two  persons with  the  consent of  their  respective  families. What  the  District  Council   Bill is trying to aim at,  is  that, mix-marriage  can  be  commercialized by  a  non-indigenous  person,  by  using the  name  of  his  spouse  for  his  business  interest,  thus  not  being  bound  by  the  various  taxes  and formalities,  which  is  commonly  known as a Benami  run  business. The  bill  would  however  run  into  many social  complexities, and also  the   interference into private social relationship,  and  also customary  laws  of  the various  clans  of  the  Khasi  community.

DANGGO BEING ISOLATED 

The Ranikor constituency has developed certain complexities, as Martin M. Danggo, recently  joining  the  NPP,  is  being  challenged  by  the  teaming  up  of   a   conglomerate  of  political  parties. Danggo  who  was  the  last  representative  of  Ranikor,  as  a  Congress  member,  had  been  accused of  neglecting  the constituency. Yet  he  had  produced  the  trump  card  of   Ranikor  being  upgraded  into  a Sub-Division. Unlike  in  the  South  Tura  seat,  the  United  Democratic  Party,  local  unit,  has  shown  sign  of  rebellion,  as  it  would  not  support  Danngo,  though  being  a  NPP  person  of  the  MDA  alliance.  However coming in between Pynshngain N. Syiem  the  Peoples  Democratic  Front leader,  has  decided  to  plunge  into  the  Ranikor  waters,  claiming  that  all  parties  are  supporting  him,  at  a  time  when  he  just  lost  the  confidence  of  many  parties,  which  led  to  his  resignation  as  Chief  Executive  Member  of  the  Khasi  Hills  District  Council.

A SIMULTANEOUS ELECTION 

The Election Commission  had complied  with  the  wishes  of  the  political  parties,  the  United  Democratic  Party  (UDP)  and  the  Congress  to  hold  elections  to  two  vacant  seats  of  South  Tura  in  Garo  Hills and Ranikor in  the  Khasi  Hills,  to  the  Meghalaya  Legislative  Assembly  on  August  23.  The  logic  being  that the  elections  on  different  dates  may  affect  the  voting  pattern  trend,  which  would  benefit  specially  the  ruling   Meghalaya   Democratic  Alliance.   South Tura has attracted attention, as Chief Minister Conrad K.  Sangma,  should  get  himself  formally  elected  as  member  of  the  State  legislature.  His sister, Agatha K. Sangma  being  the  sitting  member,  had  resigned  to  give  way  to  her  brother,  while  she  would  in  turn  contest  the  Tura  Lok  Sabha  in  place  of  her  brother.   The  ruling  MDA   alliance  partner,  the  united  Democratic Party  (UDP),  had  pledged support  to  NPP Conrad  Sangma,  although  UDP  local  unit  had  voiced  setting  up  its  own  candidate  On   the  other  hand  the  Congress  is propping up Charlotte W. Momin, former Principal of Tura Government Public School.
