It is alarming to hear of the situation in Kaziranga National Park which is supposedly a ‘World Heritage Site’ – Alas without the infrastructure of one. Rhinos are still being poached right under the noses of the park rangers and don’t get me started on the chaos which ensues every year when the monsoons set in and inundate large sections of this ‘World Heritage Site’. The media is often on the forefront in reporting on the regular slip – ups happening in ‘the pride of the North East’. In my opinion, such slip – ups occur all too often. It would not be surprising to me if at some point of time, we are handed an award for this number of slip - ups. All pun aside, it is high time that we treat Kaziranga National Park as a World Heritage Site instead of resting on our laurels. New initiatives have to be taken and old issues have to be addressed. We have to remind ourselves of what is at stake – two thirds of the world’s Great One Horned Rhino population besides countless other species – flora and fauna which constitute the World Heritage Sites rich bio – diversity.
