Livid over the fact that they were unable to get their hands on the labourers in the hospital, the rioters then proceeded to go on a rampage, vandalizing shops in Tura market and also torching of a vehicle.
In a bid to maintain law and order, the district authorities had clamped a curfew in the area. Two dead bodies were also found near Tura Civil Hospital where the enraged mob attacked vehicles that passed by. Later on, after a detailed assessment of the situation had taken place, the Government had seen the need for additional security and Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma had also called for the deployment of additional CRPF personnel from the Centre to effectively control and contain the situation and avoid further escalation.
As of now, the migrant labourers seeking are leaving the town en masse. To stem the violence, a high level review meeting which was chaired by Home Minister Roshan Warjri reviewed the situation. Instructions were given by the Government for the deployment of reinforcements to augment the security forces currently managing the situation.
Parliamentary Secretary in charge of Home Winnerson D Sangma and Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) YC Modi have rushed to West Garo Hills to take stock of the situation.
Apart from the indefinite curfew that was imposed in West Garo Hills, the district administration had convened a peace meeting in which all prominent members of the society had participated.
The Government, on its part has condemned the molestation and the subsequent acts of violence and has made it crystal clear that those involved in the incident will be dealt with using a firm hand.
The situation in Tura, till the filing of this report has calmed down even as the tension in the air is still palpable.
