Tangkhul Students

Many of the people belonging to the Tangkhul community who were studying in Shillong are serving today as educationists, politicians, scientists, research scholars, lawyers, and as IAS, IFS, IRS, bankers and insurance officers.

James HaorahSome of the other noted achievers from this community today rose from very humble beginnings. Sublime Ningshen, for instance, hailed from Ningchou village which is situated on the fringes of the Myanmar border. He studied chemistry at the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) and is today a post doctoral fellow at Hokkaido University, Japan. His father, Solomon Ningshen is a former President of Tangkhul Naga Long.

James Haorah, now an Assistant Professor at the University of Nebraska, USA, began his schooling at Khamasom village when he was eleven years old. He was based in Shillong as a student for about twenty years.Sublime Ningshen

The President of the students’ union, Thotreingam Tungshangnao, on the momentous occasion of the Golden Jubilee of the Tankul Students’ Union, Shillong (Tangkhul Katamnao Long, Shillong) (TKLS) expressed his gratitude to the Government and the people of Meghalaya, local authorities including the locality headmen, the Khasi Students’ Union and other students’ organisations and the Naga elders residing in Shillong.

The activities of the year long celebration of the Tangkhul Students’ Union, Shillong include a film festival on Tangkhul culture (among the films, Kungyee, produced by Pamreiso Shimray was recently selected for a World Premiere at Australia’s Aperture Festival at Melbourne) and a musical extravaganza by Reuben Mashangva at the NEC Auditorium, a reception programme at Nagaland House Community Hall and a grand finale at NEHU campus, followed by a community feast.

The Minister for Food and Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Government of Meghalaya, Clement K.Marak attended the Golden Jubilee as the chief guest and the Director of ICAR, Umiam, S. V. Ngachan was the guest of honour. Others who spoke of the occasion were, Toki Blah, President of ICARE and Joseph Shingnaisui, a past president of the TKLS.
