The BJP Decimates all Opposition in the General Elections 2014
Swati Deb
On a national paradigm the last decade in India has been a decade of mis - governance. Corruption went berserk, hundreds of youth and even those with jobs went jobless and the economy was in doldrums. Indian economic growth dropped from over 9.5 per cent in fiscal 2006-07 to under 5 per cent in 2012-13.
The recently concluded general elections provided an opportunity to size up the polity and it goes without saying that Indians could take a corrective step by punishing the wrongdoers and the non-performers. On whether they could have made a different choice other than trusting a man called Narendra Modi is a question that remains to be answered by time.
The mandate 2014 seeks to challenge the reality of coalition politics and for the first time since Independence, the BJP became the first non - Congress party to gain a majority on its own.
In the past too, the country has braved through such a few crises. The debacle with China in the 60s, the emergency and suspension of fundamental rights in the 1970s, politics of opportunism, terrorism and corruption in the 1980s, the economic doldrums of 1991 and later the political instability. Even in 2004, the country did not hesitate to vote out ‘a rather performing’ Government of Atal Behari Vajpayee ostensibly because the BJP leadership could not prevent the 2002 mayhem against Muslims in Gujarat and worse could not replace Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi. “Each time the country has rebounded emphatically because we Indians may not be good at anticipating the problems but by nature are good at fixing them. Thus, India has shown its appetite for reinvention and to rekindle itself for a march towards greater glory,” says a senior political observer in his blog.
