There is an Immoral Traffic Prevention Act 1956 in place to deal with the immorality of human trafficking. However, the frustrating part of the story concerning this Act is that it only refers to trafficking for prostitution and does not provide comprehensive protection to children.

It is true that child trafficking is a global concern. In our country, it is an issue of grave concern. There are reports from many areas about an appalling rise in kidnappings and trafficking of children in India. Way back in the year 2005, a study was conducted by the National Human Rights Commission of India (NHRC) after it had received alarming reports from the press, the police and non – government organizations (NGOs) about the rise of human trafficking within the country. The survey found that India was fast becoming a transit point and destination for traffickers of women and children for sexual and non – sexual purposes. It also stated that the poverty – stricken States such as Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa (then), Rajasthan and West Bengal were the areas where the incidence of human trafficking was high.
