A village detached from the world

Maheshwari Sabor is a daily wage labourer. Due to various reasons, every day she does not get work. The situation becomes worse during the rainy season. Getting work on a rainy day is something very difficult. If she does not find the work for a few days at a stretch, the mother and daughter duo have to spend nights without food. “She is still a child and sometimes cries for food. But, at that moment I become helpless as I find nothing to offer her. This is very painful for a mother when her daughter sleeps hungry. But, nothing is in my hand,” says Maheshwari with a trembling voice.

It is not an isolated case. Every family of Dinesh Nagar has a similar story to tell. And the most ironic thing is that the curse of poverty has gripped around 90 families living in Dinesh Nagar, named after the former Assam minister Dinesh Prasad Goala, the village is around 35 km from Silchar town, second biggest town in Assam after Guwahati, and is under Lakhipur LA constituency. Sadly enough, no government aid has reached the village.
