Unusual ways to define year 2014 (Sikkim)

Another news maker in Sikkim assembly election was that for the first time in 20 years, the people of Sikkim voted for the opposition party Sikkim krantikari Morcha (SKM) which is led by P.S Golay who happens to be a minister in Chamling’s government. This 2014, Sikkim witnessed 10 opposition MLAs in  the opposition bench.

The Chamling-led Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) had secured a two-thirds majority in the Assembly elections winning 22 seats out of 32.

Although chief minister Pawan Chamling had rejected his younger brother RN Chamling’s candidature from his party citing his own principle to keep family members away from politics for Rangang-Yangang constituency by election, younger brother RN Chamling won by election as independent candidate. RN Chamling became the first person in the history of 15 years of assembly to be an independent Member of the Legislative Assembly defeating his elder brother’s party candidate. Recovering from a nosedive post 18 September 2011 earthquake, Sikkim tourism bounced back to normalcy. The mainstay got further boost as global travel guide Lonely Planet endorsed Sikkim as the most visited destination of 2014.

To maintain strong rules and regulation, Sikkim Assembly passed 3 new bills; Sikkim Agricultural, Horticultural Input and Livestock Feed Regulatory Bill, Sikkim Determination of Lease Bill and Sikkim Anatomy Bill.

Chief Minister said that the bill has been introduced to give a legal backup to the Sikkim Organic Mission. He lamented that instead of an expected positive feedback from the members of the house on the bill, it was indirectly opposed by some of the members. He also clarified the house that the State Government has not received any fund from the Government of India in the name of Sikkim Organic Mission for which the State Government is often blamed. He also ensured to compensate any loss incurred by the farmers while adopting Organic farming.
