Former Block Development of Bishalgarh in Sipahijala District, also close aid of Chief Minister Manik Sarkar surrendered him before the court for his involvement in embezzling Rs. 17 crore without executing works against work orders issued under MGNREGA and other projects. He was axed down from his incumbent post of Deputy Director of Information and Cultural Affairs Department. Alongwith him, 11 officials also came under scanner for their hand in misappropriation of the government fund. Prime Minister’s Tripura Visit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the second unit of 726.6 MW thermal power plant at Palatana in Udaipur sub-division in Gomati district. The power plant is one of the biggest thermal power projects in the entire NE region, capable of generating power to all eight NE states and beyond.
While addressing the inaugural ceremony, Prime Minister Modi said that an agreement has already been linked with Japan to develop a road connecting Myanmar which will further prove beneficial to the northeast. He also praised Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed saying that the big plant -726 Megawatt Power Project is a great achievement for Tripura.
Crime on Women at its Worst
Soma Majumder, a housewife in Tata Kalibari area under Chandrapur area in Old Agartala sub-division, West Tripura district, was tied hand-to-feet to a pole and brutally tortured. The issue later gathered severe criticism from all quarters. Twenty people accused to have been involved with the issue were later arrested and sent to judicial custody.
The state police initially denied to register a complaint relating to the issue. Later, media reports with live footage of the incident recorded on an anonymous cell phone set things back on track.
Statehood Demand Rattles State
The Indigenous Nationalist Party of Twipra (IPFT) organized a massive rally at Agartala city on August 04 demanding separate state comprising areas under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC). The party, which earlier held a 72 hour hunger strike at Delhi in December, 2013 beside a series of talks with union home ministers in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013, demanded that true development for the tribal communities were being seriously jeopardized by the non-tribal rulers at the helm of state government. The party rubbished the demand of more power to the district council floated by INPT and Congress party and tabled an aggressive demand of separate statehood for the tribals which instantly picked up favour in the hills.
