A Lost Leader
The meeting recalled Late Tariang’s immense contribution towards the development of the state ever since it was formed in 1972. He had played an instrumental role in the setting up of the Congress Bhawan in the state and steered the party to new heights as its President on two occasions. The MPCC in particular and the people of the state in general shall forever remain grateful to him for his vision and path-breaking growth plans.
Terming it as a great personal loss, the members of MPCC also observed that the Late Tariang was held in high esteem by society for his humility and simplicity. Meghalaya Home Minister Roshan Warjri paid a glowing tribute and spoke of the ‘good head and heart’ of the deceased while expressing her condolences to the bereaved family. The members observed two minutes of silence as a mark of respect and prayed to the Almighty for eternal peace of the departed soul.
J E Tariang was also elected as a member of the Rajya Sabha in 1984 while serving as the President of MPCC. At the time the people gladly accepted their representative and believed that the responsibilities of the state had been entrusted into the hands of a capable person.
Mr Tariang was known to be a dynamic political luminary having wide contacts in the corridors of power in Delhi. Apart from an illustrious political career, he was well-known in the literary world for his enlightening book titled Tirot Singh: Greatest Freedom Fighter of North-Eastern Region. The book release had taken place in the presence of Former Prime Minister of India Mr Chandra Shekhar.
