Nestled between the rolling mountains with the glittering Mt. Kanchenjunga towering over the Sky, Sikkim became the first state in India to adopt organic Farming.
Prime minister inaugurated the three days long Organic Festival 2016 and addressed the plenary session of the National Conference on Sustainable Agriculture and Farmers Welfare at Chintan Bhawan on January 18.
Addressing the plenary session of the National Conference, Prime Minister Modi started his speech in vernacular language saying people of Sikkim are good, very loyal, sincere and dedicated. In his maiden visit to Sikkim, Modi conveyed delight and happiness over natural beauty of Sikkim and termed Sikkim as Sukhistan.

Prime Minister paid homage to former Governor of Sikkim (2002-2007), V. Rama Rao who left his heavenly adobe at Hyderabad on January 17.
Prime Minister Modi said Sikkim is an example to the nation and the world in the area of organic Farming. This tiny Himalayan state has perfectly elucidated and is model to rest of the country and the world at large on how preservation of environment and development can go hand in hand.
Prime Minister praised the chief minister Chamling for his vision of welfare towards farmers of Sikkim for the development of the state. Lauding the effort of Sikkim government under the leadership of Chief Minister Pawan Chamling, Modi said the state which was commenced for being the first Indian state to adopt organic Farming, initiatives of organic farming is branding for the organic product to propagate and enhance its value in the national as well as world market.
Prime Minister mentioned that Sikkim as an example of resolve despite difficulties and struggle, towards organic farming but now the efforts of farmers is recognized by the whole world and organic wave will spread across the globe. Farmer has to be motivated and sensitized on various schemes like soil health card for the betterment of farming. He also pointed out the importance of soil test laboratories and it should come up in all government school where soil test labs will be set up to use which will be benefited to farmers across the country during vacation and suggested developing digital online platform for progressive and appreciated that Gangtok for being rated as 10 cleanest city in a survey conducted by Government of India.
Prime Minister launched the logo of Organic Sikkim along with new three varieties of orchid species- Sardar, Din Dayal and Namo. The first two names were chosen by the Prime Minister while the third one Namo was chosen by Chief Minister Chamling in honour of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Prime Minister also handed over Letter of Appreciation to the chief minister, Pawan Chamling for its journey towards total organic farming.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was himself delighted after witnessing the floral welcome he received at Ridge park near Gangtok where a flower exhibition was put on. During the function, Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling did not miss a chance to remind the Prime Minister Narendra Modi of Tribal issue that three lakh Sikkimese people are still deprived of Tribal status while more than 30, 000 are waiting exemption of income tax. He lauded the Prime Minister for organic support.
Earlier Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government granted Tribal Status to Limboo and Tamang for the reservation of seats in Sikkim Legislative Assembly. Urging the Prime Minister, Chief Minister said, though the former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee granted the tribal status to Limboo and Tamang for reservation of seats in the Sikkim Legislative Assembly is still pending. On behalf of the people of Sikkim I request the Prime Minister, Modiji to address and bless our demands.
Talking on Organic Farming, Chamling said I request the union government to provide biodiversity fertilizer to the states that practice organic farming and government should provide double amount of bio fertilizers to the states practicing organic farming, to lure the states using chemical fertilizers. He has urged delegates from different parts of the country to witness the organic festival so that organic farming can be adopted back at the homes. If, a small state Sikkim can adopt organic farming then why not other states of India? The perception of the country has changed because of the leadership of an intellecutual and innovative Prime Minister. Now the world looks up to India. The biggest development is respect for the country and its people added Chamling. He urged all States to take up organic farming for better health and better environment. Farming needs to be made a fashionable profession to attract the educated youth to the farms again he added.
Organic revolution is the need of an hour and the Prime Minister can lead this revolution in the world with the support of the entire nation. The Organic Farming Revolution along with Chemical Free world is the need of an hour and Prime Minister has the potential to guide the world to walk on this path. The effort invested in organic farming has born a success due to support of the Prime Minister. I request the Prime Minister for the guidance and protection to our state in our endeavors to follow your footsteps further said Chief Minister.
On January 19, PM Modi before he left for Assam, he visited the organic exhibition at Saramsa garden 14 km away from Gangtok. Modi witnessed the organic produce display by 55 Sikkimese farmers. Modi expressed his pleasure to witness various organic produce stalls of Sikkimese farmers. He also interacted with the farmers and exchanged pleasantries with the organic farmers of Sikkim.Chief Minister Chamling announced that Sikkim will observe January 18 as an Organic Day from next year. The announcement was made by Chamling after the Governor of Sikkim Sriniwas Patil placed a suggestion to celebrate the Organic Festival on January 18 every year.
