Fight for Statehood A fight for own survival and identity

. Soon after the centre decided to divide Andhra Pradesh and to create a new state Telangana, a fresh demand for statehood by way of ‘Kamtapur’ by the All Koch- Rajbongshi Students’ Union had caught the attention. Another movement being the most violent was the demand for Bodoland by The Bodoland People’s Front in Assam. A separate Garoland state had also been raised by some people from Garo regions of Meghalaya. Apart from that, centre had received several demands for creating new states over the years in the form of Kukiland in Manipur, Vidarbha in Maharashtra, Gorkhaland in West Bengal, Saurashtra in Gujarat, Coorg state in Karnataka. There was a demand for creation of Kongu Nadu state by curving out regions of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka. The demand for Tulu Nadu comprising the border region of Karnataka and Kerala had also been raised. The list will not end here. The proposal for states like ‘Kosal’ comprising some districts of Odisha, ‘Mithila’ comprising regions of Bihar and Jharkhand, ‘Vindhya Pradesh’ from regions of Madhya Pradesh were also geared up. There was periodic demand by Naga tribes in Nagaland and Dimasas, Karbis in Assam. In Uttar Pradesh there had been demands for Awadh Pradesh, Poorvanchal, Bundelkhand and Paschimanchal or Harit Pradesh. A demand for creation of Konkan, comprising Konkani speaking people in Western India, Bhojpur comprising UP, Bihar and Chhattisgarh, Braj Pradesh consisting some divisions of UP, Rajasthan and MP has also been raised. Recently we have witnessed a demand for Tipraland from the people of ADC areas of Tripura.
