Kalikho Pul was born on 20 July, 1969 at Walla village,one of the remotest and easternmost villages of the country in undivided Lohit, now Anjaw district. His mother Koranlu Pul died when he was just a year old toddler while the father Tailum Pul died when he was just six. Thus he, a single child of his parents was orphaned  at a tender age left to carve his own destiny. He was taken care of by his paternal uncle. He could not have dreamt then of rising up the ladders in public life but fate had the best things in store for him.
