IROM CHANU SHARMILA

She was the youngest of nine siblings. As a child she aspired to become a doctor, but gave up her dreams when she realized it was not her cup of tea. She tried but could not clear her class 12 examination. Though her bacademic aspiration never took off, she did a short course in Journalism for 6 months and learnt Stenography for a year.

Her father, Irom Nanda, was an attendant in the state Veterinary Department. To Porompat’s residents, he was Dr. Nanda, for the care he would take of their ailing pigs, cows, dogs and other animals. Her father was a great influence= in her life and from him; she says she draws her love for animal and nature.
