“Sesquicentennial Celebration” FROM THOMAS FISHER TO ROBERT STEWART AND S VISWANATHAN

The celebration has unfolded many known and unknown events of 150 years, starting from the assumption of the first Deputy Commissioner, Robert Stewart, on January 15, 1867. The history of the period has been most fascinating. After the annexation of the territory of Cachar by the British from Dimasa Dynasty in 1832, Silchar was the administrative headquarters of East India Company. In fact, the British first set up their administrative headquarters at Dudhpatil which was subsequently shifted to this side of river Barak for administrative convenience and security reasons.
