Tawang is a perfect place for mountain lovers who wish to escape from the crowdiness of city life and like to experience the attractiveness and beauty of nature. Tawang is a historical part of Tibet. The inhabitants of Tawang are the Monpa Lamas from Tibet, so it is popularly known as the ‘Land of Monpas’. The Name Tawang literally means ‘The Chosen Horse’.
Tawang is a popular tourist destination for the well-preserved Tawang Monastery. The Tawang Monastery was founded in 1681 by Merek Lama Lorde Gyatso. The monastery belongs to the Gelupa section. The monastery is connected with the Drepung monastery in Lhasa. It is said to be the Biggest Buddhist Monastery in the world outside of Lhasa,Tibet. It is the major holy site for Tibetian Buddhists as it was the birthplace of the sixth Dalai Lama ‘Tsangyang Gyatso”
