First woman taxi driver of Sikkim

First woman taxi driver of Sikkim

Fourty four year old Doma Phuti Bhutia of Pangthang has become the first lady commercial cab driver of Sikkim.

Sharing her story on how she was inspired to become a commercial cab driver, Bhutia said that she used to attend the public meetings of SDF’s President Pawan Chamling and listened to his speeches attentively where the latter used to urge women to come forward in every field and compete with the men for their own self reliance. “I was motivated by the speech of Chief Minister Pawan Chamling and I realised today’s women should not lag behind their male counterparts as there is ample scope provided by the government for their advancement,” she said. She also feels that women can make their mark in any field if they are professional and competent. “Maintain your dignity, be firm and there won’t be any problems,” she says.

Bhutia is also giving training to 10 enthusiastic girls under capacity building programme at Lingdok.
