A Military Icon Remembered
Field Marshal Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw, MC was born on the 3rd of Apr 1914 at Amritsar to a Parsi family and joined the Indian Military Academy in the first Regular course in Sep 1932 . During the Second World War, he was severely wounded in the Burma campaign and was awarded Military Cross in Feb 1942. After an illustrious career in the army, was appointed as GOC-in-C Western Command and later Eastern Command. He played a major role in liberating Bangladesh from Pakistan and was later elevated to the rank of Field Marshal in Jan 1973. He left for his Heavenly abode on the 27th of June 2008. He was a man with unflinching courage and leadership skills par excellence.Besides the existence of the Manekshaw Museum and the Sam Bahadur Memorial Park, the unveiling of the Sculptured Statue of the Field Marshal by Major General KS Sethi, SM, General-Officer-Commanding 101 Area at 58 Gorkha Training Centre is a moving step to remember and pay obeisance on his first death anniversary.
