Achievement

package from the State Government for the development of the North Cachar Hills district of Assam. This announcement of the Chief Minister was reciprocated by Niranjan Hojai the self styled C- in – C of the DHD-J group as he reassured the Government that they would support the early completion of the East – West Corridor Project and railway projects.

It may be noted here that DHD-J, since its formation in 2004 has taken maximum advantage of the hilly terrain and forests of the district. The North Cachar Hills district has about 94% of its total area under forest cover and is perfectly suited for militant camps and hideouts.

The surrender ceremony was conducted by Additional Director General of police (SB) Khagen Sarma. MP Biren Singh Engti, Hill Areas Development Minister Khor Sing Engti, Chief Secretary Prafulla Chandra Sarma, Joint Secretary of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs Naveen Verma, GOC 3 Corps, DGP Sankar Barua, Home Commissioner Jishnu Baruah, Administrator of North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council, Police and Army officers attended the function.

Incidents of clashes with militants in the North East are gradually fading out and it is only hoped that with the right rehabilitation package and proper developmental initiatives, the region will see peace as a lasting factor.
