The villagers of Dikling, Chalamthang, Namcheybong and Samsing have been selectively given the work of growing flowers. “Pakyong and the surrounding belts are best for growing these type of flowers, so we have given this opportunity to the people residing in these places.” The department has also sown the seeds of more than 60,000 varieties of these flowers in Ipecac garden, also known as Saramsa garden.
In another development, even the MG Marg here is being spruced up just in time for the International Flower Show scheduled to begin from March 14. There are plans to relocate the bust of Mahatma Gandhi located at the heart of the town.
Having discussed with a cross-section of the society, the State Urban Development and Housing Department (UD & HD) has prepared a proposal for the relocation of the Gandhi bust. The shift in the location of the Gandhi bust has been initiated in order to further enhance the new look that the town will be getting soon. Not only will the Gandhi bust be relocated, a newer and a bigger bust will be installed in its place.
The first phase of the project for beautification of the MG Marg has been taken up with the tentative cost of Rs. 5.5 crores, additional chief engineer of UD&HD C Zangpo said. Moreover, with the idea of making MG Marg a pedestrian Mall, there are plans to place removable benches on both sides of the Marg so that people can easily chat and interact with each other. There is also a provision to provide fast food vendors during peak hours, Mr. Zangpo said. Stones brought from Andhra Pradesh are used at MG Marg. Specially designed street lights with well-equipped fire fighting system will also be made at the stretch
Meanwhile, the department has also requested the house owners of the MG Marg to paint the roofs of their houses with green colour to maintain the uniformity indicating the greenery and the environment of Sikkim. The shop-owners of MG Marg have also been requested to modify and to give aesthetic and modern look to their shops. Both the parties have showed positive response as well as promised to cooperate with the government.
