Founder VC inspires Mass Communication students
During a short visit to the Assam University after a long interval of nine years, the first ever Vice Chancellor of Assam University Professor J. B Battacharjee, in an interactive session with the students of the department of Mass Communications recalled how he had introduced the department in the Assam University at a time when no other university in the northeast was engaged in teaching mass communications. He also talked about the importance of ethics in journalism and lamented how most journalists fail to practice these basic cannons of their profession.
Accompanied by the present Vice Chancellor Professor Tapodhir Battacharjee and Pro Vice Chancellor Professor G. D. Sharma, it was like a walk down memory lane for the former Vice Chancellor as he recalled the various struggles that the university had to endure during its formative years. Pro Vice Chancellor Professor G. D Sharma also dwelt on the contribution of Professor J. B. Battacharjee in the setting up of the university. “Much of what we have attained today is all because of the strong foundations laid by Professor Battacharjee,” he said. In a rare display of emotions, a visibly choked Vice Chancellor Professor T Battacharjee broke into a spontaneous rendition of ‘We Will Overcome’, an evergreen inspirational anthem, much to the surprise of everyone present.
The session was concluded later in the evening when dignitaries spent some time at a photo shoot with the students and faculty members of the department.
