Climate change is a system that destroys the atmosphere at different levels. The world has only seven years to develop new technologies to save the environment.”
Dr. Pachauri said the time has come to limit the climate change by controlling the emission level of fossil fuel and the North East region can be an initiator of change for marketing its bio-fuel all over the world.
Sounding a warning on the impacts of climatic change on agriculture and food security, Dr. Pachauri said, “Meltdown of glaciers effect agriculture as well and food security is compromised. By 2010 there will be a 50 per cent reduction of agriculture in Africa effecting people’s survival there.”
“India has the infrastructure for projects to save the environment,” said the scientist and assured the Assam Government of all possible help keeping the climate and environment in mind. The Nobel laureate lauded the efforts of Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi in preserving the bio-diversity of the State while carrying on with the development activities.
The eminent scientist attended a workshop on Biodiesel: Towards Energy Security and the launching of the department of biotechnology’s natural awareness clubs for Assam, Meghalaya and Tripura at Assam Administrative Staff College in Guwahati.
Presenting a solar lantern, a solar torch and a photovoltaic device to Gogoi, Dr. Pachauri asked him to be a part of the “lighting a million lives campaign” through which solar lighting devices are being propagated as they provide a smoke free environment. The campaign aims to bring light into the lives of one million rural people in the country by replacing kerosene lanterns with solar lighting devices.
Altogether 15 schools from Assam, Meghalaya and Tripura participated in the programme which aims to enhance understanding among students about the immense value of biological diversity of the country, the importance of locally available bio-resources and their sustainable use for economic development.
Dr. Pachauri also met Governor Lt.Gen. (retd) Ajai Singh at the Raj Bhawan.Md. Sabir Nishat
