PREITY ZINTA tells JYOTHI
VENKATESH that
Bollywood has not taken a back seat as far as she is concerned just because she has bought the Mohali IPL 20:20 cricket team
Q: Tell us something about the new series Trapped which you are supporting as a celebrity?
A: The new six part series Trapped which is being aired on the National Geographic channel every Monday at 10 pm is a different kind of series which sets out to salute people who are brave. The series celebrates the courage and ability of each survivor and rescuer to overcome the life-threatening obstacles they were faced with. Inspiring and heroic, these stories are a tribute to human endurance, will and determination. I serve like a platform to project such attempts as a celebrity ambassador. I think that these stories are a tribute to human endurance, will and determination. It is my favorite channel because it imparts knowledge. What I like the best about this show is that even people from little known places have been handpicked for the bravery awards.
Q: What is your role as an ambassador for Godfrey Phillips Bravery?
A: I have played many roles all through my life, right from the time I was a tiny tot till now when I am a celebrity who is working in films. However I have no hesitation to say that this role of the ambassador for Godfrey Phillips Bravery that I am playing is the most cherishing role as far as my life is concerned. I have always believed that yesterday is the past, today is the present and tomorrow is the future. We should forget about the past and cling on to the present since the present is a gift from God especially when you know nothing about what the future is going to unfold in your life.
Q: Do you enjoy being hailed as a man, thanks to your frankness?
A: After the Salem court case, I have always been asked whether I like to be hailed as a man. Let me make it very clear once and for all. I do not like to be labeled a man at all. I am happy as a woman. I just stood up for my rights when I was asked to speak up the truth in the court. Instead of trying to change the entire world, all that you need to do is try to change yourself. It takes just one person to make a difference in this world.
Q: Why did you decide to compete with Shah Rukh Khan as far as IPL 20:20 team is concerned?
For heaven’s sake I am not competing with Shah Rukh Khan who is my senior. Even today I seek his advice when I am not sure about making a decision and he helps me out. I decided to back the Mohali IPL 20:20 team because I feel that we need a team that believes in transparency and discipline. I am happy with my IPL 20:0 team. In films, I have my own feelings whereas for the team, I have to motivate and also be motivated.
Q: How do you react to success and failure of your films?
A: I have had a high success ratio since a vast majority of the films in which I had acted have clicked at the box office. I have learned from my films which did not do well at the box office, not to sulk and get upset when my films flop and also not to keep your nose smug when your films click because in films, success and failure go hand in hand.
Q: There is a lot of speculation about your marriage to Ness Wadia and your equation with Ms. Maureen Wadia. Would you care to clarify?
A: I am a public figure. I expect you to give me that respect which I deserve. I never ask any one in the media who his or her son is dating or whether his or her daughter is in love with his or her neighbor. Why should the media always ask me whether I am getting married to Ness Wadia. I will shout from the roof top as and when I decide to get married. I want to concentrate on my career for the next two to three years.
Q: What is your reaction to the demand that North Indians should quit Mumbai?
A: I am a North Indian. If you ask me what my comment about the diktat that all the North Indians should leave Mumbai, all that I would say is that I am hurt by the comments against the North Indians, because more than just being a North Indian, I feel that I am an Indian. My brother fought for the Kargil War. Not once did he say that we were from Himachal when he fought the war. It is indeed sad when you hear statements which create a wedge between individuals from different regions within India. We Indians cannot make divisive lines between ourselves, especially when the constitution allows us to settle down wherever we like anywhere in India. To me, India is my land. I can make a house in Kerala or Kashmir. I truly feel and hence say it. My dad sued to get transferred to different states in India when he was in the army.
Q: What did you learn as a child from your parents?
A: I remember my parents teaching us the importance of telling the truth at any cost. We got applauded the most when we told the truth. I was the naughtiest kid on the planet. My parents did not kill me because I told them the truth. If you speak out the truth, you will not go downhill. This is what my parents had taught me. Thanks to my parents, I have learned to be more humble and walk forward with my head held high.
Q: What is your advice to women to keep their heads high?
A: It is sad that women are still being treated as second class citizens in a vast majority of the country today. When I was shooting for The Hero, it shook the daylights out of me when I came to know that in the village there were just eight girls as compared to 50 boys. On one hand we have a GDP of 8.3% and our IT sector is developing India into a super power and on the other hand, we are also in a country which worships Durga, Saraswati and Kali, this is what happens to women because of lack of education. It would indeed make a very big difference if only one woman supports another woman in India. Only then can we put a full stop to bride burning and dowry deaths in our country.
