He further said that admission into colleges have become difficult without good marks thus depriving them of pursuing higher education. He also pointed out that educational institutions should empower youths and offer skills that are required for employment. Chief Minister, Dr. Donkupar Roy who spoke on the occasion as the Chief Guest said that the State Government is coming up with a policy to encourage private investment for promotion of education in the state. He said that to revive the past glory of Meghalaya as an educational hub of the region and transform Shillong into a knowledge city reputed institutes such as IIM, NIFT and IIHM have been set up.

The first academic year started in the year 2006 with 13 faculty members and 130 students enrolled into six under graduate and two post graduate courses. At present the University has five campuses at Shillong, Tura, Rymbai, Nongtalang and Nongstoin. At present there are 90 faculty members and around 1000 students.


The aim of the University was to offer only job oriented courses so that after graduating from the University the students will have the proffessional skills which will enable them to compete in the global job market. Besides training students for gainful livelihoods, the University also engages in research and projects that benefit the community. The University is also involved in tapping the traditional know-how of India’s tribal societies. MLCU along with the Society for the Promotion of Indigenous Knowledge and Practice received a grant from the Union Minister of Health for the documentation and promotion of Khasi traditional medicine.


MLCU has a well-qualified, idealistic and energetic faculty which is committed to realising the true potential of the students of this region. In this world of globalization the University aims to prepare students for careers that may take then back to livelihoods in their own villages or on the other hand propel them into multinational corporations. Thus after graduating they become balanced individuals, combining the richness of their heritage with the modern-day skills required in a global economy.
