Interview: Torak Kharpran
E.P. - When and how did you start boxing?
T. K - My father Late Aristotle Kharpran introduced me to boxing. Even my elder brothers Jerry and Larry are into boxing.
E.P. - Whom do you admire in international boxing?
T. K - I admire Prince Amir of England who is a professional boxer in the feather weight category.
E.P. - How has God influenced your life?
T. K - I thank God for the talent that he has given me. He has turned my dreams into reality. The win in the National Boxing Championship has opened a window of oppurtunity for me to compete in the international level.
E.P. - What are your immediate goals?
T. K - I am looking forward to the Commonwealth Games to be held in Delhi in 2010.
E.P. - How confident are you of winning in the 2010 Commonwealth Games?
T. K - I am really confident because we will be having the home advantage.
E.P. - How supportive is your family?
T. K - They have always supported me whole heartedly.They have been there through my ups and downs. I would like to take this oppurtunity to thank my family members for the sacrifices that they have made for me.
E.P. - How helpful has the Sports Department been?
T. K - I thank the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs.and the Sports Authority of India for providing me with the training facilities and equipments.
E.P. - What do you think the state is lacking in?
T. K - There are no basic infrastructure and no proper boxing equipment. The state also lacks in scientific coaching methods. We also do not have qualified coaches- except for my elder bother Mr. Larry Kharpran.
E.P. - What are your expectations from the state for sportsmen?
T. K - Introduction of Sports Policy will be helpful.
E.P. - What message do you have for youths of the state?
T.K - The youths of Meghalaya have potential, but they are not hungry enough to achieve their goals. I think with sincerity and determination we can overcome hurdles. But in the end it is in the hands of God.
