P. R. Kyndiah’s seventh book released-Walk With ME

In a simple and lucid language in the book, he has  quoted Swami Vivekananda;  saying that the human body is the only mind in a grosser form, the mind being composed of finer layers and the body being the denser layers and when man has perfect control over his mind, he will P.R.Kyndiahhave control over his body. The veteran Congress  leader, who has immensely contributed to the achievement of statehood for his native state Meghalaya in 1972 and  who was actively involved in the Freedom Movement, has been inspired by the message of the savant. The book which also quotes Mahatma Gandhi,  Christ, Rabindra Nath Tagore, Guatam Buddha, Martin Luther King Jr., the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam and several other eminent personalities and which is forwarded by Union Minster for Health and Family Welfare Dr Anbumani  Ramadoss, does not attempt at preaching any religion or political belief  but the author tries to share his own experiences over the years on the goodness and the benefits of walking.

This is the primary message of the senior Congress leader from the Northeast who was consecutively elected to the Lok Sabha from the Shillong Constituency for three terms.

He candidly says that his attempt is to make the readers of this book, which was formally released by the Prime Minister in the presence of several dignitaries, enjoy walking and derive immense pleasure from it. The wide array of quotes, verses and excerpts of speeches and recitations of various personalities in the book are his favourites which have influenced his life and social activities over the years. Among these is the quote derived from the Parliament office of the Prime Minister where it hangs on a wall. Most of the visitors have seen it and then forgotten it but the senior leader from the hilly state recollects it and it is imprinted in his mind:

“Lord bless me that nothing deters me from doing good deeds and if I am obliged to fight, I fight for sure to win” -Guru Govind Singh.

He claims it has been scientifically proved that walking for 30 minutes every day is the simplest way to keep healthy. A simple habit like walking helps us to unwind and keeps us physically and mentally fresh and perhaps recharge our energy. Walking is the most fruitful when one does it in a relaxed frame of mind. The book is divided into six chapters for six days in a week with recitations for each day and during walking sessions. He says so far as the book is concerned, it is conceived to enlighten the readers of all age groups and particularly the middle aged adults and those who lead a sedentary life about the efficacy of walking as an enjoyable and healthy recreation. Even the young and old will experience the joy of walking if they just go through Kyndiah’s book. Apart from physical mobility, this book lays emphasis on the mental agility and spiritual dose of contentment. The idea is to make a person wholesome and become aware of the art on how to extract the best in our own being for self- care and rejuvenation.

Commenting on the book, AICC President Sonia Gandhi has rightly said that the quotes and recitations will certainly inspire the readers of all ages to take up regular walking. This is the best form of exercise without incurring any expenses.

Dr Ramadoss’ comment is also worth taking note of. He has expressed the hope that WALK WITH ME , the seventh book written by Kyndiah, will create an awareness  among the people to maintain a healthy life style through physical exercise  and more so by walking adequately every day.

Mr. Kyndiah had served as the Chairperson of the Shillong Municipal Body when it was part of undivided Assam and played a leading role alongside legendry Rev J.J.M Nichols Roy in getting the Sixth Scheduled for the tribal communities as part and parcel of the Indian Constitution. He also occupied the august office of the Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly and was its former Cabinet Minister.

His close associates say his busy schedule as a holder of public office has not kept him from his creative activities. He has quite a few other popular books to his credit including the biographies of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and of Rev JJM Nichols Roy who was a Member of the now dissolved Constituent Assembly and fought for the rights of the indigenous people.

He has learnt from Rev Nichols Roy to utilize public office as a means of serving the people and this is what has inspired  him ever since 1942 when at a young age he plunged into the Quit India Movement led by Mahatma Gandhi.

Now, he is busy working on his latest book on the hopes and  aspirations of the Indian tribal  communities which is being eagerly awaited by the government, planners and  bureaucrats since it will help them shape policies and programmes  for the benefit of the people called ADIVASIS in India.
