Titbits - Darwin Diengdoh Pugh Passes away
Darwin D. Pugh who was the first Khasi Chief Minister passed away on 17th of November 2008 at his Kenche’s Trace residence after a prolonged illness. He was 81 and is survived by his wife, a daughter and a son.
D.D. Pugh was Chief Minister of the state during the coalition government formed by APHLC, PDIC and HSPDP from March 10 1978 to February 2, 1979. After the collapse of the three party government, he again became Chief Minister heading the two party APHLC - PDIC coalition government from February 21, 1979 to May 5, 1979.
In the 1960s he entered politics and was one of the prominent personalities who opposed the Assam Government’s move to introduce Assamese as the official language in the Khasi and Jaintia Hills.
The death of late Darwin D. Pugh is a great loss not only to the Khasi and Jaintia Community in particular but to the state as a whole.
