A Unique Conservation Story

When stringent departmental action, a whole lot of awareness campaigns, and every other initiatives have failed to evoke any response against the felling of the precious Hollong trees in the reserve forests under the Doomdooma forest division in Upper Assam’s Tinsukia district, the only way out for the division was to take the holy path.
Persuaded by the hard working Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of the Doomdooma forest division Subhash Ch. Khatoniar, the Moran community, which is predominant in Tinsukia district, has taken the unique step of declaring the Hollong tree as their traditional tree, a move that is likely to conserve the species from rampant depredation. Khatoniar is quite hopeful that the community’s move led by the All Assam Moran Students Union (AAMSU) will finally stop the felling of Hollong trees, at least in Tinsukia district.
