Magical Threads of the North East

Handloom and its integrated fields has always been an integral part of the way of life of the people of the North East and this is visible in the colourful attire of the numerous tribes of the region. The designers who were showcased at this event have tapped into this treasure trove of traditional attire and have used this as a base for their creations. During the show, designs from each of the seven states comprising the North East were showcased and each state had two sections; one for traditional wear and the other for fusion wear.
In the traditional section of the display, the designers showcased the designs which have more or less stuck to the norms. In the fusion section however, the designers had gone all out and had transformed this rich traditional attire, morphing the designs into creations with a very modern look.
The peculiar geo – political scenario of the North East region has culminated into a kind of isolation of this region and its people. To bridge this divide, it is important to host events that showcase the various aspects of the people, the land and its rich heritage. Subsequently, developmental projects will lead to an intense interest in the region, enough to attract investors and tourists.
Merchandising and marketing have been recognised as being central to the growth and development of the handloom sector in India and will promote the marketing of handlooms in the country and improve the levels of awareness amongst handloom weavers and the general public in the interest of overall development of the handloom sector. In this context and with the view to create publicity and awareness about the weaves and handlooms of the North East, the road show entitled ‘Magical Threads of the North East’ has been organised.
Having kick started its journey from Shillong; the show will next visit Kolkatta and will then stage its final show at Mumbai.
