Silent Sentinels Dhemaji’s blast victims inspire development

This tragic incident in Dhemaji reminds us of only one fact—terrorism means destruction. But sane minds that want development and progress must do something constructive against the barbarous destructive act of terrorists.

The ‘Children Educational and Career Development Centre’ (CECDC) in Dhemaji is an example of such constructive work. The CECDC building stands tall with its exquisite architectural features in a very special place in Dhemaji town. It stands as an embodiment of man’s spirit against terror and destruction. On 15th August 2004 ten children and three others lost their lives in the Dhemaji bomb blast and now there is a centre with a state-of the- art facility in their memory for all round development of children. Visitors to the centre will find all those thirteen people in the main entrance of the centre. Their bronze statues are installed at the ground floor of this magnificent building. They are there to remind all that terrorists can not silence people’s voice against terrorism, to remind all that progress and development come with construction and not through the barrel of a gun.

These meticulously built statues were brought to Dhemaji from Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. The District Administration, Dhemaji tried its best to help the sculptors in Aligarh to make the statues perfect. Anyone visiting the centre will see the outcome of their joint endeavour - the statues seem to be living from head to toe. The Chief Minister of Assam, Tarun Gogoi’s message etched on a bronze sheet next to the statues reads “The lives of ten children and three women were cruelly snuffed out by this senseless act of violence. This strengthened our resolve to fight against all kinds of terrorism and to tread the path of harmony and non violence.”

“The main objective of CECDC is to increase the positive efficiency along with extra curricular activities of children by providing facilities like Computer Training Centre, Cinematic-preview theatre cum drama workshop, Art & Craft Centre, Doll’s museum, Conference Hall, centrally air conditioned Library cum reading room, music room, auditorium with a 300 seating capacity, Cafeteria etc”, Dheamji Deputy Commissioner P. Ashok Babu said.

“All these facilities are well equipped with state of the art technology. To maintain the NRC (Noise Reduction Co-efficiency), the proper acoustic treatment has been provided. With branded push-back, high cushioned chairs, central air conditioning system in the cinematic theatre and library, a 65 inch large screen display in the Art Centre, a noiseless 40KVA generator for uninterrupted power supply, automatic gates, and an elevator, the Centre is ready to serve for children’s all round development,” the Deputy Commissioner said.

A few months back the people of Dhemaji district couldn’t even dream of such a centre for their children. But it all became possible with proper vision, mission and action of the Government of Assam and the financial assistance of Rs. 5.00 crore from Rastriya Sama Vikash Yozana (RSVY). On 15th August 2004, Dhemaji had to experience the worst and most tragic incident in its history - the infamous Dhemaji bomb blast. The CECDC has been raised at the very spot where the tragic incident took place. It is meant to display man’s will and desire for success and betterment against all odds. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi inaugurated the CECDC on 25th October 2009.
