10 Confusing Technical Terms

1. Dongle – A dongle resembles a small USB drive, which is connected to a computer to run software in a secured manner. In most instances, a dongle is used as a security device to prevent unauthorized copying of software.

2. Cookie - Text stored on a computer’s web browser are defined as Cookies. They store user’s settings interface, shopping cart contents or other data used by websites. Their functionality is simple, wherein a message is sent to the Web browser by a Web server, and the browser automatically stores such messages in a text file.

3. WAP – WAP stands for ‘Wireless Application Protocol’ which allows users to access information via handheld wireless devices. It enables access to the Internet (HTTP) from a mobile phone or a PDA. Besides this, WAP also supports most wireless networks.

4. Telephone plug or jack - Telephone plug or phone jack as it is commonly referred to is a connector hardware. It is used to connect a telephone to the telephone wiring, which in turn enables the telephone line to connect to a local telephone network.

5. Navi Key – It is a concept which significantly reduces the number of keys on the phone’s keypad. Navi keys are designed to enable the user to use the device simply by pressing the button or key of a phone.

6. Time shifting - The process of recording, storing data for later viewing or listening to on a television is known as Time shifting. A personal video recorder (PVR) or a computer with a TV tuner card is the best means of enabling the Time shifting process.

7. Digital Television (DTV) – It is used for the sending and receiving of moving images and sound by discrete digital signals. Digital Television (DTV) is in direct contrast to the analog signals used by analog TV and its concepts.

8. Ethernet - Ethernet is the local area network (LAN) technology. Ethernet was originally developed by Xerox for the Palo Alto Research Center, Aloha network. Although in the later stages, the development process was followed by Xerox, DEC and Intel.

9. PC Suite - PC Suite is a software package common used and installed in a PC to establish an interface between Nokia mobile devices and computers that run Microsoft Windows operating system.

10. Desktop Computer - Personal computers that are designed for typical office or home desks are referred to as Desktop Computer which are in direct contrast to mobile laptops or portable computers.
