Shillong Chamber Choir Wins Indian of the Year

After winning the second season of ‘India’s Got Talent’ Khoj 2, the Shillong Chamber Choir won the Indian of the Year award for putting the cultural and musical talent of the North East on the national map by winning the coveted crown.

North East Terror not Delhi’s Priority

Terror activities in North East India are not a priority for New Delhi, says a leaked US embassy code. The cable dated April 18, 2006 released by Wikileaks says that terrorism in the seven sister states “consists of many groups that are small in number compared to other terrorist organisations in India, and their reach does not extend out of the region.”

New Vijaya Bank branch at Nagaon

Raising its number of branches to 31, Vijaya Bank recently opened its latest branch at Nagaon. Albert Tauro, the Chairman and Managing Director of Vijaya Bank announced during the inauguration of the new branch that the brank would enhance its credit flow to boost the agriculture and MSME sectors in the North East. It will also open 6 more ATMs and 3 more branches during the current fiscal in the North East.

Wen Jiabao’s Single Point Agenda

China’s Prime Minister Wen Jiangbao’s recent visit to India had a single point agenda that is to sell Chinese merchandise to India to boost Chinese economy and employment in China. During his visit to New Delhi, he spoke of a $100 billion bi - lateral trade target with India by 2015. He however paid no attention to India’s internal and external security concerns, objection to Chinese claims to Indian territory, Chinese military buildup along the Indian border, Chinese arming of Pakistan being oblivious to Pakistan originated terror attacks on India and the issue of stapled visas to travellers from Jammu & Kashmir.

Awards Presented

The Jeewan Ram Mungi Devi Goenka Public Charitable Trust which was created by Sri Shankar Lall Goenka recently organised its fourth edition of the Lifetime Achievement Award for the year 2010 at Guwahati. The Awards this year were given to actress Bina Prasad and photographer Paresh Baruah.

Another award which was presented this month was the Shankar Lal Goyal Memorial Achiever’s Award at Shillong. Here, the awards for achievers in five different fields were presented by the Chief Guest of the function His Excellency the Governor of Meghalaya R. S. Mooshahary. The recipients of the award this year were St. Mary’s Secondary School, Monica Chanda, Lou Majaw, Binning Lyngkhoi and Naphibanroi Khongstid.

Parliament 2G Scam Adjournment

Opposition parties in both houses of Indian Parliament had caused the adjournment of both houses over the 2G scam as they had called for a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe on former Telecom Minister A. Raja which the government had kept on rejecting.
