Arunachal Pradesh – 25 Years of Statehood


The Planning Commission will sympathetically consider all the proposals of the State Government to meet the developmental needs of the state, he said while adding that it is the responsibility of the Centre and the State Governments to bring about development, particularly in the border areas of the frontier state.  
Regarding the construction of an airport, Ahluwalia also said that he would take up the matter with the concerned ministry for facilitating speedy construction of the Green field airport.
Referring to the initiative of the State Government to harness hydro potential, the Planning Commission Deputy Chairman said that the State Government will be able to generate power to the order of ` 10,000 crores in revenue annually after the commissioning of most of the allotted hydro-projects in the state. The judicious utilization of revenue generated would go a long way towards the all-round development of the state, he said.
Expressing satisfaction with the progress in implementation of the projects under PM Package, he acknowledged the rapid development of the state since attaining statehood in 1987. The state now has 4600 schools and its literacy rate was recorded at 55 per cent as per the 2001 census, he said.
Dr. Ahluwalia also congratulated the people of the state and the State Government for being selected in the IBN-7 Diamond Awards as the best performing state in the small states category for its accelerated development.
Earlier, greeting the people on the occasion, the Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu reiterated his commitment for the rapid growth of the state. Emphasizing the need for rapid development  of the state particularly in border areas, the Chief Minister urged upon  the Central Government and the Planning Commission for the sanctioning of funds for various  projects proposals  which included the project for connecting 22 unconnected administrative centers in border areas, project for providing drinking water facilities in rural areas, maintenance and construction of foot suspension bridges, porter tracks and log bridges, Trans-Arunachal Power Grid, fund for carrying PDS commodities to border areas through helicopters and release of at least 40 per cent SPA funds as untied funds.
He also called for early sanction of funds against Green field airport and expedited progress on BRO roads. Reiterating his government’s priority on hydropower, Chief Minister Khandu appealed to the people including political parties to cooperate with the State Government in harnessing the hydro potential of the state for rapid development.
“A lot still needs to be done to augment our present International Border Management capacities,” the Chief Minister said while pointing out the strategic location of the state with an almost 1200 km long mountainous and snow-clad border with China. The Chief Minister also highlighted the achievements of the State Government and its priority sectors.  
While referring to the tourism sector of the state, he said that the state has registered 5 lakhs tourists in the year 2010 and urged upon the stakeholders in the tourism sector to extend warm hospitality to the tourists and ensure cleanliness and hygiene in order to attract more tourists to the state.
The first lady of the state Anupama Singh inaugurated the first ever Zonal Level Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) exhibition at Indira Gandhi Park. Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court M. B. Lokur released the 25th Statehood Day souvenir on the occasion. The Chief Justice also inaugurated the Food Village.
