UNIVERSITIES AND INVESTMENTS IN THE NORTH EAST

The reasons for not having a regular flow of investment and progress are myriad ranging from terrorism, poor infrustructure, difficult and unreachable areas, traditional history of being princely states ruled by the concept of kingdom among other more recent probable causes like poor accountability of resources. The root cause for an unhealthy and weak investment can also be traced to the educational structure and system as that is the basic foundation for the growth in society. Yet it would not be true to completely pick out only education because over the last data of literacy, the
The close cooperation and involvement of the prestigious universities of the region would undoubtedly go a very long in creating the right environment of progressive development and investment.

recently published data of 2011 clearly shows an improvement in the overall percentage of literacy of the entire Northeastern region comprising Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, Nagaland, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh and the recently included Sikkim. In the recent years informal sector jobs like personal marketing of products have gained importance not only in the North East but also throughout India in general that could have created an imbalance in investment. However, one can not assertively state that as in depth understanding will be required. In the previous 5 years or so, the flow of capital into the region has gained momentum as the Central Government has realized the importance of North East India and absorbed the need for closer supervision for the future of the nation. Nevertheless, one always hears about the lack of accountability in government organizations and small scale enterprise development by the private sector. This imbalance has resulted in the North East being more aligned towards entrepreneurship that has been slow to gain the projected condition. With the above situation in mind it is worth considering a closer co-operation of various universities of the Northeastern region with regard towards handling and completion of the projects and appointing both fresh and experienced minds to carry out the implementation of various systems of expansion and investment.

The root cause for an unhealthy and weak investment can also be traced to the educational structure and system as that is the basic foundation for the growth in society.

As an instance let us consider the following as a co-relation notion. Every investment proposal has a select field that can be correspondingly aligned to either humanities, commerce or science streams as far as the basic background is concerned. Let us consider the recent activities of development work from various government organizations that deal with infrastructure, connectivity, tourism policies of the region. Can we have or consider a scenario where the similar work is studied by experts of Northeastern universities rather than elsewhere to ensure a firmer and more constructive policy? Sports is another very significant area that needs to be bought under the purview of universities and numerous systematic processes that can bring out world standard sportsmen and women from the North East region who will go on to make the nation proud, this can happen by way of a structured policy for identifying, training and thereby creating a new generation of sports people. The climate of the region is conducive for many sporting events and even in the rural areas there are individuals who can be world achievers, yet till date a host of such individuals have declined their fates due to ignorance and simplicity besides lack of proper information and guidance. Hence the investment flow in expansion of sports in the North East will in many ways be benefited with closer cooperation of the ministry of sports and its subsidiaries with individual departments of various universities all around North East India.

The area of urban planning is yet another area where more capital flow is required. With a concrete policy, the growth and building of traditional micro and macro level industries, the research and development industry in North East India needs a revamp for newer and modern inventions to outgrow whereby the possibilities of record breaking scientific endeavours growing out of the region can not be ruled out. The people of various states who head research and development fields would certainly be benefited as funds are made available for their respective industries.

Extra curricular activities in the North East form an integral part of the society and in the recent past many nationally renowned singers, dancers and various other such individuals and groups would gain prominence as structured flow of finance to create and develop more such programmes would get an impetus for the uplift of the North East region. Establishment of cricket and football stadiums around the North East and in specific towns would be the much needed boost for the uplift of this majestic region.

The rural areas have always been a high point in the sister states and a policy of development in those areas will only get stronger with a well organized and comprehensive revival and sustenance programme as is seen in other developed and developing countries.

As mentioned, the close cooperation and involvement of the prestigious universities of the region would undoubtedly go a very long way in creating the right environment of progressive development and investment. Further the negative dimensions such as corruption will also be taken care of and irrespective of ideologies, the people of the region would gain in more ways than one. The most immediate concern of unemployment would be adequately addressed and good governance would prevail. Among other successful implementations in this direction has been the Right to Education Act that would make way for an improving society since attendance in schools across the length and breadth of the region will see an increase. The role of universities in the North East region needs a more comprehensive concept for enabling the growth that would undoubtedly place the region amongst the developing zones in the global matrix of enhancement.
