Moms and Babies
Mr. Raghunath’s humourous article on parenthood, nay, motherhood is, when one thinks about it, a lighter side of the proverbial doting mother. It is no secret that there are mothers everywhere who are very competitive about their children and think that they are the best. For these mothers, no other baby in the world is equal to them, period! However, on a more serious note, this is exactly the reason why these babies, when they grow up, come to understand this weakness and how to exploit it. Many a time, these babies grow up to be double faced demons – little angels in front of their parents while the world knows that they are completely different elsewhere. Often, the parents, duped by their little angels are in for the shock of their lives when their children’s exploits are brought to light and have a hard time coming to terms with the fact that their little angels are capable of such acts. Basically, what I am trying to say is that this is a dangerous trend which has become very common and that parents should see their children as what they really are instead of what they want them to be.

Anniversary Issue
Congratulations to Eastern Panorama for 20 years of publication. The anniversary issue was amazing and the flashback articles shows the depth with which the publication has covered issues related to the north east. Eastern Panorama has to be commended for the in depth way in which it has covered core issues through all these years. May the magazine live on to its reputation and continue to serve the North East as only it has been able to do.

Anniversary Issue
The Cover Story of your anniversary issue was an interesting read. However, that being said, I noticed that in your ‘In Hindsight’ section there were a lot more events related to crime and violence than there were events of a positive nature. I hope that history does not repeat itself in this regard. The tribal people of the north east are a sensitive lot and it does not take much to spark off violent reactions. Judging by the way the region has developed into what it is now, I doubt if my fears will be realized. However, as the maxim goes, those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it. It is with regard to this maxim that I feel that the ‘In Hindsight’ section derives its importance because it serves to show people that nothing can be achieved through violence and that calm and reasoned thought is always the better way of solving any problem.

Ralengnao Khathing
After reading your May 2012 issue of Eastern Panorama, I came to know about Mr. Ralengnao Khathing. I have no doubt that many such great men have emerged from the neglected and little heard of north east region. Such great men born in this region are usually overlooked with precious little being heard about their achievements and contributions. I understood from the article that Mr. Kathaing was a man who never sought or asked for acknowledgement or recognition and that he considered his achievements as simply a result of his commitment to his people and country. However, I believe that men such as Mr. Khathing need to understand that they are role models and that they need to play their role in moulding the youth. Stories about such great men need to be told so that they can serve as examples and inspiration to the youth of today.

NEPA Director’s Admission
It was interesting to note that the Director of the North East Police Academy had actually admitted that there are cases of police harassment. This is a commendable statement made by such a high ranking officer. It is not often that such high ranking officers admit that there is a fault in the system especially when it concerns their department/ charge.

Assam’s Death Valley
The issue of the death of tea labourers which was highlighted in your article ‘Assam’s Death Valley’ is a disturbing issue. It is shocking to hear that the government and the tea estate owners did not do anything even after they had heard of the plight of these labourers. This article comes as a blow to the Assam Government which presents Assam as a state where the state government goes to all ends to help the people. I wonder what the Chief Minister of Assam has to say about this issue.
