My empathy for Dr. Rumi Nath should not be misinterpreted as a condoning of her actions. In fact, I strongly believe that her actions are unbecoming of an elected representative of the people and that she is setting a very bad example for our youth. However, how the matter was dealt with by the people was uncalled for. What good is there in dragging a pregnant woman on to the streets and beating her black and blue? What purpose does it serve? What point was made? The assault has only turned my displeasure with Dr. Rumi Nath’s actions into pity for her. It can therefore be said that the actions of the people have only boomeranged on them as they have resulted a lot of empathy for Dr. Rumi Nath.

It is with great pride that I put down your July issue of Eastern Panorama after going through the interview with Ms. Matsiewdor War Nongbri. Being selected as a judge at the highest sporting event of the world is a great achievement for somebody from this ‘remote’ and ‘neglected’ region of India. Her selection only shows that we indeed do not lag behind the rest of the country in terms of talent. This fact is further solidified by the fact that so many athletes in the Indian contingent are from the north east.
