MATE PEOPLE CELEBRATED THEIR TRIBE RECOGNITION AS “SCHEDULED TRIBE” OF MANIPUR (INDIA) IN NEW DELHI.

The function commenced with a prayer by Pastor Sheilai Thanglet Mate, President, Mate Christian fellowship Church, Manipur and the function was presided by Shri L .N. Thangpu Mate, President of Mate Tribe Council (MTC), Manipur, India & Chairman, Mate Tribe Recognition Demand Committee and Moderator Ph. J. Mate, General Secretary, MTC, Manipur.
Shri Mani Cheranamei, Ex-MP (Outer Manipur) was Chief Guest of the Function.

Pastors, leaders, social workers, students of various communities (Thadou-Kuki, Simte, Zou, Gangte, Tiddim-Chin, Paite, Meiteis and others living) in Delhi-NCR attended the function.

Mate, youth during the celebration of their tribe recognitionIn his speech Shri L.N. Thangpu Mate, President, Mate Tribe Council gave a brief historical account of Mate movement for recognition as Scheduled Tribe of India since 1948. He said the Mate Tribe Recognition Demand Committee, Manipur and the Mate Tribe Council, Manipur has been fighting for recognition of Mate as one of an independent and distinct community and its inclusion in the Scheduled Tribe list of Manipur for the last many years. The first memorandum for Mate recognition as Scheduled Tribe of Manipur was jointly submitted to the Dewan of Manipur State by the President Khul National Union (KNU) in 1948. The endless efforts made by the leaders of Mate Tribe Council, Mate Tribe Recognition Demand Committee and Mate-Taithul Union, Manipur has now bore fruits, the Government of India has recognized the Mate community as Scheduled Tribe of Manipur under Article 342 of the Constitution of India through the Constitution Scheduled Tribes Order: 1950 Amendment Bill-2011, which has  included Mate under serial number 34 in the list of Scheduled Tribes of Manipur vide Government of India Gazette Notification No.02 of 2012 issued by the Legislative Department, Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India dated 9th January,2012.

Notification of recognition of Mate People as ST of Manipur IndiaShri Langsun Holkhomang Mate, Chief-Host of the function was the founder General Secretary of Mate Tribal Union, Manipur, India (founded on the 6th October, 1960 at Tuibuang (Mate) village, Manipur) gives a brief speech on Mate-Gangte-Taithul-Neihsial relationship. He said recognition of Mate Tribe as Scheduled   Tribe by the Government of India will and cannot loosen our blood relationship. He also declared that the Union which the Mate elders and leaders established in 1960 has no connection or link with recently formed Union: Mate Tribe Union (MTU) at Tengnoupal under the leadership of Mr. Jangkhosei of Tuibuang. He urged Mate boys and girls to study hard and compete for all India Services.

Pastor Samte Thangzasiak Gangte also gave a biblical speech on the occasion. He said since the beginning, God had blessed Pu. Mate to be a distinct and independent tribe as he blessed the people of Israel. Now, the children of Mate community should not forget their creator. Pu. Thangzasiak Gangte, Section Officer and Dr. Tongbram also delivered a thanks giving speech

 On this occasion the president of Mate Tribe Council, Manipur, India administered an oath of office to the office bearers and members of the Mate Tribe Council, Delhi-NCR.

Shri Mani Cheranamei-Chief Guest of the function stated that the younger generations of newly recognition tribes Mate, Liangmai, Rongmei, Zemei, Inpui and Thangal should not forget the path of God and their elders who endlessly fought for recognition as scheduled tribes. They should work hard for betterment of their community. He also narrated episodes of struggles for recognition during his membership as Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha).
The celebration concluded with a thanksgiving prayer by Pastor Houlim Thenkholun Mate, Vice-President, Mate Christian Fellowship Church, Manipur.
