Gujarat Tale
An Uncensored Truth’ tries to be a writer who thinks passionately about certain issues. May be Nirendra Dev, a journalist and a former Nagaland correspondent for ‘Eastern Panorama’,deals with the chief protagonist of the book Narendra Modi with kid-gloves. At times, he gives him benefit of doubt; but also makes candid speaking on Hindutva and future of BJP and of Modi (as a probable Prime Ministerial candidate).
The book does not forgot to caution BJP that “while almost all allies of UPA are disillusioned with Congress, none of them even remotely has shown inclination yet to switch over to BJP-led NDA”. Again, on developmental front the book eulogies last 10 years of Modi’s rule and says, “….had Gujarat been a nation of its own, it would be above many European and Asian economies like China and Ukraine.” Pause and read few pages, you will be surprised. Can Modi be compared with Ibobi Singh of Manipur? - What’s common between Congress chief minister of Manipur Ibobi Singh and the controversial Gujarat chief minister, known for his radical Hindu chauvinism? They both are “playing” back to the gallery, says the book. Look at what Manipur chief minister did in disallowing Naga rebel leader Thuingaleng Muivah from visiting his native village? I call this phenomenon the ‘collaboration’ of the state with communal organizations,” Dev says adding “Modi is simply playing back to the gallery”.
The book, seeking to put in the right perspective the politics of Narendra Modi, his developmental model laced with militant Hinduism, also throws a rather mystifying question: “If Modi is a pragmatic politician, how can he be faulted? (for Hindutva chauvanism) After all, which chief minister can go against the overwhelming nearly 90 percent voice of his people?”.
Dev’s argument is also that the relationship with his support base has not been damaged. Rather it has emerged “a stronger bond” since the riots of 2001 as Modi he is regarded largely as the only chief minister who stood by the majority Hindus.
